 AIDS, Malaria and Malnutrition One of every five children will die before his or her fifth birthday because of AIDS, or malaria. 20% of children under the age of five are severely underweight due to malnutrition. Poverty is widespread The average wage is less than $1 per day. Fewer than 1% of homes have electricity. In rural Uganda, fewer than 1% of people have access to clean water. 31% of the population is illiterate because they cannot afford to attend school. The average family eats only one meal per day. |
